Common act ‘could send knees through eye sockets’

EMERGENCY service authorities are warning people to keep their feet off their car dashboards saying 'it could send your knees through your eye sockets.'

Audra Tatum from Walker County in Georgia has decided to share her experience from a couple of years ago in the hopes that other people will learn from her mistake.

Tatum told CBS News she was sitting in the passenger seat, with her foot resting up against the dashboard while her husband drove.

The couple were heading to her parents' house when another car pulled in front of them and T-boned their car.

Tatum said: "The airbag went off, throwing my foot up and breaking my nose. I was looking at the bottom of my foot facing up at me."

Tatum broke her ankle, femur and arm; it took her more than a month to start walking again and is still recovering from the injuries she sustained.

"Basically my whole right side was broken, and it's simply because of my ignorance. I'm not Superman. I couldn't put my foot down in time."

Her injuries have changed her life, that she can barely stand for more than four hours at a time without being in tears and can't do her job as an EMS.

After previously posting on their Facebook page about the danger, Chattanooga Fire Department shared Tatum's story to convince those who said, "they would take their chances".

The page posted the original warning after seeing a lot of people in passenger seats, riding with their feet up.

The post cautioned that airbags are deployed at 160-350 kilometres per hour, which is another reason why small children should not be sitting in the passenger seats of cars.
