Come on girls, bust a move and help a fabulous cause
BRAS - some of us love them, others can't stand the thought, but one lady is calling for all Southern Downs women to unclip their lady-lump holsters and join together in an attempt to make the world's largest bra chain to raise money for breast cancer prevention and research.
Caryn Gorrie of Brisbane hopes to collect 200,000 bras from various collection points around the country, including the Daily News office and Cafe Jacqui's in Warwick, by September 1.
Mrs Gorrie's world record attempt, among the other fundraising initiatives she in involved with through the Cancer Council, derived from personal experience and is her way of making a difference.
"We had six family members in one year diagnosed and since then we've had more," she said.
"For that to happen in such a short space of time, it had a real impact on the family."
And so she stood up to do something about it - and now she's chasing a world record.
"The idea of doing the world's longest bra chain came from sitting on Facebook actually, and somebody was doing a world record attempt and I thought it would be a great way to get more PR for breast cancer," Mrs Gorrie said.
The current record is believed to stand at 166,625 bras, but Mrs Gorrie is calling out for everyone to help her smash that record.
"The idea is that people will donate $1 with each bra, with that whole dollar going straight to Cancer Council," she said.
Mrs Gorrie is also calling on Southern Downs businesses to nominate themselves as a drop-off point.
"I'm looking for businesses who can set a goal to collect 1000 bras," she said.
"The more I can have collecting in little bite size chunks the easier will be to hit the target.
"And in the end, even one bra helps."
The chain of AA-H and beyond-sized cups will be judged on October 5.
The bras will then be donated to those who need it most.
"The wearable bras will be donated to women in Fiji and Vanuatu and Thailand," Mrs Gorrie said.
To get involved with the world's largest bra chain, all you have to do is drop off your bra and a gold coin donation to a drop-off point near you.
