Vintage cars to descend on Coffs

HISTORY buffs and rev-heads alike are gearing up for a big weekend, with up to 60 historic vehicles set to descend on Coffs Harbour for the annual Hub Rally.

Held by the Coffs Harbour Veteran and Vintage Car Club, the rally runs from October 1-4 and is expected to attract almost 150 entrants from around north-eastern NSW.

As one of the more established groups in the region, the Coffs Harbour club shares hosting duties with Armidale, Tamworth, Port Macquarie and Taree.

Club president Andrew Winter said the rally is a chance for the club to get into the spotlight and involved with the community.

“A lot of the attraction is the challenge of restoring and maintaining a vehicle of that age, and the connection to history and people's memories,” Mr Winter said.

And he should know. Mr Winter will be entering his 1912 model in the rally, a car which he said ‘is waiting on her letter from the Queen'.

The event was last hosted by Coffs Harbour in 2005, and celebrates the restoration efforts of passionate vintage car owners, allowing them to compare, compete and display their vehicles.

The cars will be judged on Sunday at Centro Toormina, with the public invited to get involved by voting for their favourite vehicle in the People's Choice Award.

The judging categories are not limited to the cars, with a nod to those who've struggled during the rally:

“If they've suffered some misadventure over the weekend they'll be awarded the ‘Hard Luck' award – not always the prize you want to win”.

Following the judging a convoy will be formed for the Observation Run, a rolling time capsule that will give the participants an opportunity to show off their veteran vehicles in towns between Sawtell and Urunga.
