Coffee runs in his veins
THESE days everyone is passionate about coffee, none more so than North Coast independent coffee professional Mark Bullivant.
Mr Bullivant is the plantation manager of the Byron Blue Coffee Estate's 45,000 tree plantation at Coopers Shoot.
Aside from single handedly running the estate he also trains baristas and assists other coffee producers at the contract coffee roasting facility he operates in Ballina.
His latest accomplishment is that Byron Blue Coffee Estate will now be distributed alongside other premium international coffees by Sydney-based Cofi-Com Trading.
Cofi-Com Trading is one of Australia's leading suppliers of high quality and single origin coffees from microlots in Brazil, Costa Rica, Ethiopia and Kenya.
For aficionados of coffee, single origin refers to a coffee variety with a single known geographical origin and microlots refers to small growers who produce less than 100 bags of premium grade coffee.
"Coffee is really only rated on its taste, so I don't really sell coffee, I sell flavour," said Mr Bullivant.
"People are welcome to come and watch me harvest and go through the whole process of producing the coffee. I can help set them up to get into the industry and assist them along the way to making a dollar."
Mr Bullivant started out working with coffee industry pioneer Chris Athenis, founder of Aroma Coffee in Sydney.
He grew up drinking coffee made using the stove top Moka pot and still prefers coffee made this way.
