Insta-famous Essena shuts down her social media accounts
UPDATE: COOLUM teen Essena O'Neill has disappeared entirely from Instagram and YouTube after her unveiling of some ugly facts about social media led to an ugly spat with some mates in the US.
Ms O'Neill made headlines around the world this week after the Daily reported her comments claiming the "perfect" life shown on her instagram account was all fake.
Fellow bloggers and friends NinaAndRanda hit back at Ms O'Neill's comments, taking apart comments she made on a video posted to Vimeo about how she had been at the "pinnacle of success" in Los Angeles when she had actually been staying with them.
The friends claimed Ms O'Neill's "misery" in Los Angeles was more to do with a break-up with her boyfriend than social media being fake.
Ms O'Neill today hit back in turn, accusing the girls of twisting her words.
"... why do you feel okay talking about my personal life to the world," she said in a video. "This is about so much more than me. Please this isn't right, you've twisted my words."
INITIAL REPORT: THIS Sunshine Coast teenager wants you to know the ugly truth behind every single one of her 'perfect' instagram photos.
Meet Essena O'Neill: the 18-year-old powerhouse from Coolum who has half a million followers on Instagram, 200,000 subscribers on her YouTube and Tumblr accounts and 60,000 people viewing her Snapchat every day.
She's not a singer or an actor and has never appeared on reality television.
Essena is part of the new age of 'Social Media Celebrity' and she's decided she's had enough and has quit social media for good.
"I haven't done anything for this success except put pictures of myself online," Essena told her followers in one of her last videos to YouTube before signing off forever.
Over the past week, Essena has deleted almost 2000 photos from her Instagram account as well as changed her account name to "Social Media Is Not Real Life".
"I have created a celebrity mentality or a celebrity concept of myself online and I wish for that to stop right now.
"I have created an image of myself that I think others feel is unattainable, others look at as a role model, others look at as some type of 'perfect human'.
"I get people saying every day on my Tumblr or on Instagram… 'I wish I was you'.
"Lately I've realised how horrible that is. For someone to follow my content and think I wish I was you, that is the opposite of what I want to promote."
The photos remaining on her account have had their captions reworked to reveal "the truth behind the photo".
She's even rocked the boat with certain clothing and tea brands she was paid to promote.
" I am definitely not a role model, I am definitely so so far from perfect. I make more mistakes than anyone I know."
Essena is now working on a new website called letsbegamechangers.com
