Man killed in crash on way to birth of grandchild

UPDATE: A Sunshine Coast man who died in a head-on crash near Mackay was travelling with his wife to far north Queensland for the birth of their grandchild.

That's according to Mackay police district Superintendent Bruce McNab, who said the tragic circumstances of this morning's crash highlighted the importance of driving safely.

The crash happened on the Bruce Hwy 7km north of Calen about 3.20am.

The man killed was a 57-year-old from Bli Bli who was travelling with his wife, also 57. She suffered non-life threatening injuries.

A 28-year-old Bowen man was taken to Mackay Base Hospital in a critical condition.

A 26-year-old man from an unknown address was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said the Sunshine Coast couple had been travelling northbound on the highway in a black SUV.

They had just driven past Old Pindi Bog Rd, about 7km north of Calen, when the 26-year-old man, driving south in a white sedan with the Bowen man as a passenger, appeared to have crossed into the northbound lanes.

The cars collided head-on in the 100kmh zone, the police spokesman said.

He said it was unclear what caused the 26-year-old driver to leave his lane.

In line with procedure, police said they would be requesting "a specimen of the 26-year-old driver's blood" from the hospital for alcohol and drug analysis.

No charges have been laid and investigations into the fatal crash, about 60km north-west of Mackay, were ongoing.

Superintendent Bruce McNab said "these types of accidents are all too common in our community".

He warned drivers police will be out in force on our roads in coming weeks and months.

UPDATE: A 28-YEAR-OLD Bowen man is in a critical condition in Mackay Base Hospital after a fatal crash on the Bruce Highway near Calen, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Meanwhile, a 57-year-old Bli Bli woman, the wife of the 57-year-old Bli Bli man who died in Tuesday morning's crash, is in a stable condition at the hospital, as of 12.40pm.

The spokeswoman said a 26-year-old man, whose address was unknown, was also in a stable condition.

UPDATE: THERE was "no obvious reason" why a driver seriously injured in a fatal crash near Calen crossed onto the opposite side of the Bruce Highway, Queensland Police said.

A police spokesman said a 57-year-old Bli Bli man, who died in the crash about 3.20am Tuesday, had been travelling northbound on the highway in a black SUV with his wife, a 57-year-old, also from Bli Bli.

They had just driven past Old Pindi Bog Rd, about 7km north of Calen, the spokesman said, when a 26-year-old man, driving south in a white sedan with a 28-year-old Bowen man as a passenger, appeared to have crossed into the northbound lanes.

The cars collided head-on in the 100kmh zone, the police spokesman said. He said it was unclear what caused the 26-year-old driver to leave his lane.

The Bli Bli man died at the scene, a RACQ-CQ Rescue spokeswoman said, while the 26-year-old man was taken to Mackay Base Hospital by rescue helicopter with serious injuries.

The Bowen man was taken by ambulance to the hospital. The extent of his injuries is unknown, although they are not believed to be life-threatening.

The Bli Bli woman was treated at the scene for what is believed to be minor injuries, but was not admitted to hospital, police said.

In line with procedure, police said they would be requesting "a specimen of the 26-year-old driver's blood" from the hospital for alcohol and drug analysis.

No charges have been laid and investigations into the fatal crash, about 60km north-west of Mackay, are ongoing.

Mackay Base Hospital has been contacted for more information.

UPDATE: A 57-YEAR-OLD Sunshine Coast man has died and at least one other person is in a serious condition after a "horror head-on smash" on the Bruce Highway near Calen.

A RACQ-CQ Rescue spokeswoman said its helicopter also airlifted a 26-year-old man to Mackay Base Hospital with serious injuries after the two-car crash about 7km north of Calen, just before 4am.

The Mackay-based rescue helicopter service, with a critical care paramedic aboard, flew 50km to the scene and landed on the Bruce Hwy about 4.30am to treat and transfer the injured 26-year-old driver to hospital.

A RACQ-CQ Rescue spokesman said it was believed one of the vehicles, which had two occupants, crossed onto the wrong side of the road and slammed into an oncoming car.

The other driver, who was from Bli Bli, died at the scene while his passenger, believed to be his wife, sustained minor injuries, the spokesman said.

The rescue helicopter was on scene for an hour and arrived at Mackay Base Hospital just before 6am with the patient aboard in a serious but stable condition.

His passenger was also taken to Mackay Base Hospital by ambulance, the spokeswoman said.

A Mackay Base Hospital spokeswoman said the 26-year-old man was in a stable condition Tuesday morning. She was awaiting more information on other patients.

Police released more information about the man who died about 10am this morning.

The RACQ-CQ Rescue helicopter returned to base at 6.40am.
