Coast couple won't spend more than $1000 on their wedding
EVERYONE loves a good wedding.
But they can be expensive, stressful and even a little pompous.
This is why a Bli Bli couple have decided to spend no more than $1000 on their ceremony, set to be held on March 30.
Shauna Malone, 45, and Steve Davis, 44, were engaged at exactly 12.01am New Year's Day.
It was the cheeky idea of Mr Davis, who was given until midnight on the last day of 2017 to propose.
"We have been together for 14 years. That's a long time," Ms Malone said.
"Recently my stepfather passed away. He was with my mother for 30 years and they weren't married. So one day I came home and told Steve he had one year to ask me to marry him."
And he did, if not a minute late.
"I was joking around with him on New Year's Eve, telling him he only had a few hours to propose, but then he surprised me and got down on one knee," Ms Malone said.
"The $1000 was my idea but my other half was fine with it.
"We are simple people and didn't want to spend a fortune on things we would only use or wear once, we don't see the point."
Ms Malone has planned most of the wedding already; her dress and jewellery sorted, a celebrant paid for and the decorations will be hand-made.
"We are having the ceremony at our property, hopefully under the big macadamia tree.
"It will be very laid-back with about 40-50 guests, and everyone will bring a plate of finger food."
The March 30 date is not only Good Friday, but also the couple's anniversary.
"My advice to couples wanting to do the same thing is do your research and go to Kmart."
