Coalition promises $4.5m upgrade to Ballina Hospital
BALLINA Hospital will get a second operating theatre and its medical imaging department will be doubled in size if the Coalition wins government next month.
The $4.5 million announcement was made yesterday by Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey and Nationals candidate for Page, Kevin Hogan.
"It is an important win for Ballina because we had been advised the section that is being upgraded has had real function and space issues, and is in need of a funding injection," Mr Hockey said.
"We are prepared to invest in rural and regional healthcare to ensure that people have a better quality of life.
"We will deliver this for the Ballina community as a matter of urgency."
Mr Hogan said the upgrades to Ballina Hospital would have a flow-on effect for the regional healthcare system.
"It is going to take the pressure off Lismore Base Hospital," he said.
"As my wife is a nurse herself, I know that proper resources make all the differ- ence to the job they do, which they do so well in our area."
NSW Nurses and Midwives Association branch secretary, Gil Wilson, welcomed the news about funding for Ballina Hospital.
But he said there was a lot more to be done.
"Lismore Base Hospital is the hub.
"If you don't have a strong hub, you don't have strong spokes," he said.
"This is not going to stop the problems we're seeing at Lismore."
