Coalition policy on marine parks to 'restore confidence'

THE Coalition has promised to suspend and review Labor's marine park network, in a formal election pledge released on Monday.

While the Opposition had previously proposed a review of the marine management plans, a policy has now formally been released.

A statement from Tony Abbott's office said an Abbott government would "restore confidence" in the Australian fishing industry by returning "scientific and commercial rigour" to the network's protected areas.

It comes after the Rudd and Gillard government spent years negotiating with all partners to create the parks, and also follows a campaign by some fishing interests that it could damage the industry.

Compensation for affected fishermen has also been criticised, with those measures also likely to be included in the Coalition's proposed review.
