Jade shines at swimming carnival

AT the Alstonville Public School swimming carnival, one swimmer swam head and shoulders above the rest.

Jade Cusack, 10, won the 11 years girls 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle.

As well as winning all her age events, she then won the open girls 100m freestyle and 200m individual medley, before joining the senior girls relay team that finished third.

Jade said she began swimming when she was five and has trained under Lennox Head’s Vic Golle and Alstonville’s Hayley Thompson.

“Vic’s really good even though he sometimes works me hard in the 25m pool,” she said.

“I don’t mind the work because I know I’m learning new techniques from him.

“Hayley’s not as hard but she’s great to train under.

“She’s always advising me; giving me pointers on how to improve. They’re different types of coaches but they’re really good.”

This dynamo aims to make it to State this year to swim butterfly, her fav-ourite stroke.

She was disappointed with her fourth placing at the regionals last year and is determined to make 2010 her year.
