Best North Coast surfers to compete at Pro event

ABOUT 200 surfers have entered the inaugural Tweed Coast Pro event at Cabarita next week.

The best Far North Coast surfers will get to compete close to home in the new World Qualifying Series event.

Lennox Head surfer Stu Kennedy is a WQS competitor and he's also on the cusp of a call-up to the main tour.

Byron Bay surfer Garrett Parkes is a regular in WQS events, along with teenager Zac Wightman.

The four-day competition starts Monday and is the second on the new NSW Pro Surf Series.

Kennedy reached the semi-finals of the first event at the Carve Pro in Maroubra earlier this month.

Adam Melling surfed in QS events at the back end of last year as he battled a knee injury and is expected to compete.

Kennedy and Melling are hopeful of gaining wildcards in the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast in March.

The series was developed for Australian and international surfers to gain ranking points and prize money on the Qualifying Series.

To cater for the increased demand for a high calibre competition in the area, the event has been extended by another day with the men running a round of at least 144 and the women running 48.

In addition to the enlarged draw and longer event window, Telstra Tweed Stores have come on-board as naming rights sponsor.

Telstra Tweed marketing manager Scott Fletcher said the partnership was the perfect opportunity to give back to the surfing community.

"As a proud sponsor of Cabarita Boardriders, we're excited to extend our support to the club and the local community by partnering with Surfing NSW for the next three years," Fletcher said.

"It will help make this new QS event at Cabarita a huge success for the community as well as the competitors."

The final two events are next month at Avoca Beach and Boomerang Beach on the Mid North Coast.
