Kadina class caters for the talented

AFTER months of planning, Kadina High School will begin 2014 with an enrichment class for incoming gifted and talented students.

Head science teacher Zane van den Berg said the Year 7 Endeavour class will "offer gifted students opportunities to challenge themselves".

"We've accepted 19 Year 6 students with top NAPLAN results for the self-select Endeavour class," Mr van den Berg said.

"It will still follow the curriculum but the students will have more opportunity to undertake greater enrichment tasks.

"Our faculties are currently developing a combined team to offer a holistic approach to teaching the extension class. That's important for higher ability students.

"We value these top-achieving students and we're committed to providing them with what they need to meet their passion. We want to do something special for them."

Students Emily and Jessica Smart, who completed Grade 6 at Goonellabah Public School last year, said they were "pumped at the possibilities for us at Kadina and toward the future".

"We're excited at what Endeavour offers," Jessica said.

Endeavour will be an exclusive Year 7 class in 2014, with Mr van den Berg hoping to add another Year 7 class in 2015 when this first intake becomes Years 7/8.
