Six arrests at Melbourne anti-Muslim rally

AN ANTI-MUSLIM rally near Melbourne has ended with six arrests as demonstrators clashed with members of a counter protest.

More than 500 Reclaim Australia protesters took to the streets of Melton carrying placards calling for the country's borders to be closed to Islamic refugees.

Police formed a human barricade between members of the protest and adherents to the No Room for Racism campaign, arresting participants as scuffles broke out.

Similar rallies were held across the country, though none with similar problems for police.

Victorian Attorney-General Martin Pakula denounced the Reclaim Australia protesters on Twitter, calling them "cowards, mugs and bigots".

Premier Daniel Andrews was similarly scathing.

"If you're out there peddling hate, you're not a protester, you're just a bigot," he said.
