Church member to front court for chopping finger with shears

AN ELDERLY church volunteer is accused of chopping off his neighbour's finger with a set of shears during a dispute over the trimming of a garden hedge in Sydney.

Lawrence Lo, 71, was trimming the hedge when his 58-year-old female neighbour reportedly ran out and attempted to stop him.

The top of her right index finger was severed in the process.

Mr Lo told the Herald it was an accident and that the woman's finger "must have pointed to something close to my scissor".

He said he stopped trimming when he saw the "blooding" and "then the police come and arrest me".

The woman was rushed to hospital where her finger was reattached.

Police charged Mr Lo with one count of recklessly causing grievous bodily harm.

He will front court on January 30.
