CHOPPERGATE II: Barnaby Joyce takes $4000 helicopter ride

JUST two days after the Federal Government released a review into politician's entitlements which said helicopters should only be chartered, on the taxpayer dollar, if there were "compelling reasons" Barnaby Joyce spent $4166 on a chopper trip.

Mr Joyce's office say he took the trip to save a four hour drive from his home-base in Tamworth to Drake - about halfway between Tenterfield and Casino in Northern New South Wales.

The trip was apparently made in order to open a Telstra tower in the township.

Mr Joyce who, became the leader of the National Party in February, is facing a tough battle in his seat of New England as independent Tony Windsor has stepped forward to contest the seat.

Mr Joyce's office said there is no airstrip in Drake, he had been out at meetings until 9pm the night before and the size of his electorate means he has an allowance for the specific purpose of chartering flights.
