Choose pet gifts with care

A PET as a Christmas gift may sound like a good idea, but is it the right one?

Mackay Pet Superstore manager Brad Smith says it comes down to the person, their lifestyle and living situation.

"Most people buy a pet for a companion, some buy them just to interact and play," Mr Smith said.

Some people went for looks, while others went by an animal's "cool factor", he said.

"It does vary on the age of the person. Often families will buy a pet for their children to teach them to care for something and have responsibilities, such as cleaning the cage and feeding it," Mr Smith said.

"We sit down with the customer and go through a checklist, because at the end of the day, if they're not going to be able to care for it, we say to them maybe isn't the pet for you."

If you're still not sure if your choice is the right one, Mr Smith said the store offered a 24-hour hold service so customers could think on it.

"Our aim is to make sure we find the right pet for the right person and we have an obligation to make sure the pets are cared for properly," he said.

BEFORE YOU BUY

  • There is an ongoing financial commitment, including food, cleaning and vet bills.
  • Do you have the appropriate space or equipment in which to keep your pet?
  • Can you provide daily attention and undertake daily cleaning and feeding duties?
  • Pets shouldn't be a surprise present unless the recipient has requested it; particularly with cats and dogs.
  • Is the pet a good match for you? Buying an energetic dog will not suit an inactive person.
