Choirs combine to bring story of peace and joy

IN THE best tradition of King's College Cambridge, the choirs of St Andrew's and St Carthage's will combine this weekend to present Nine Lessons and Carols in time for Christmas.

Derived from the biblical Christmas story, the non- denominational celebration is modelled on the traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols first held at King's College Chapel, Cambridge on Christmas Eve, 1918.

Choir spokeswoman Penny Kempler said the program, which would include a small brass ensemble, "has been put together by choir director/organist, Warren Whitney".

"It will include familiar carols and settings of Christmas spanning four centuries," Mrs Kempler said.

"Christmas poetry, prose and prayers will round out the celebration at this time of love, peace, joy, and hope; so regardless of your religious beliefs, let's celebrate it together."

Admission is free to the concerts at St Mary's Ballina on Friday night, December 20 from 7.30pm and St Carthage's on Saturday night, December 21 from 7.30pm.
