China's new bridge one for the birds

THE world's highest bridge has opened to the public.

Beipanjiang Bridge Duge crosses the canyon that separates Guizhou and Yunnan provinces in China's south-west.

It is in mountainous territory and soars 565m above the river. It overtakes the Si Du River Bridge in the central province of Hubei to become the world's highest bridge. The 1341m span cuts road trips between Liupanshui in Guizhou to Xuanwei in Yunnan from five hours to less than two, according to state broadcaster China Central Television.

Guizhou province is home to more high bridges than every other country put together. These are the world's highest bridges - measured as the distance to the ground or river.

The world's tallest bridge measured as the height of its structure is France's Millau viaduct at 343m tall.
