Cherry picker goes up in smoke at Casino

TWO Richmond Valley Council workers were lucky to escape this morning when the cherry picker they were about to go up in caught fire at Colley Park, Casino.

At around 8.30am one of the men said he saw 'drops of fire' coming from the machine and then it started to smoke.

"I didn't want to go anywhere near it after that," he said.

It was a good call as the machine caught fire sending a large black pall of smoke into the sky that could be seen for kilometres around Casino.

"I'm just glad we weren't up the top of the machine," the other council contractor said.

"We were harnessed and ready to go, as we were installing lights for the soccer grounds."

The scene was attended to by Casino Fire Brigade.
