A YOUNG woman has been told off by a magistrate for coming to court "dressed like she was going to the gym".

Ipswich Magistrate Stuart Shearer lashed out at Breanna Daphney Potter (pictured) when she showed up in court dressed in a Nike singlet and women's running shorts.

The 20-year-old had appeared in court to plead guilty to driving on a suspended licence and to failing to dispose of a syringe.

Before Potter was able to enter her plea though, Mr Shearer took a moment to give her a public dressing down.

"Do you think it's appropriate to come to court dressed as if you are going to the gym?," he asked Potter.

"This is a formal proceeding and you are expected to dress appropriately."

In relation to her charges, police prosecutor Sergeant Jo Colston said Potter had been caught driving while her licence was suspended in Flinders View on October 8.

About three weeks later, police found Potter with a capped syringe in the pocket of her pants. Potter told the officers she had not realised the needle was there.

Shearer asked the Raceview woman for an explanation as to why she was in posession of the needle.

When Potter couldn't offer any reason, Mr Shearer said he could then only assume that the syringe had been used for illegal drugs.

Potter was convicted and fined $800. Her licence was also disqualified for a month.
