Charming game is given new 3DS life
ONE of the most charming games to come from the Nintendo stable makes another welcome return on the all powerful 3DS.
If you liked the recent Donkey Kong game on the Wii, then this latest release is going to look very familiar. However the 3DS iteration is also significantly different enough to warrant fresh play, even for those who have the previous game in their library.
This is because DKC Returns is in many ways a better game than its Wii cousin. For a start the move to the 3DS has led to a more playable game.
As the Wiimote is not a part of the equation, the at times frustrating 'Wii controller waggle' is no longer required.
To many the need to give the previous game a Wiimote functionality was what ruined play.
Instead the 3DS delivers a more conventional control scheme and one which is ultimately more responsive.
This is just as well too, as the game is still mighty tricky at points, as you try and help recover Kong's stolen bananas.
These have been pinched by a bunch of Kong's animal associates who have been hypnotised by an evil masked spirit.
The story might still be rather silly, but the play more than makes up for the tale's superficial nature.
You do this by exploring a number of lavish stages, some that are similar to the original release, but many of which are different.
There are stressful moments too, like the times you have to ascend vertical platforms while the walls close in and bring sharpened stakes closer to you at an increasingly alarming rate.
The game also challenges you to leap dropping platforms, ride rockets and cruise along in that DKC staple, the runaway mine kart.
There are some nice looking pseudo 3D elements that see you being fired by a 'barrel cannon' into background scenery, with the camera panning to follow you too.
All of this adds variety and while there isn't much about the game design that is new, the levels are still very easy on the eye and lovingly animated.
The goofy jazz inspired soundtrack ensures everything bounces along quite nicely as well.
