Chamber president puts her body on the line
LOUISE OWEN is prepared to lay her body on the bitumen to protest the proposed introduction of timed parking in Lennox Head.
The Lennox Head Chamber of Commerce president said she and other business owners would lay down in protest on Park Lane if the restricted parking proposal by the Ballina Shire Council went ahead.
“If the council goes along with their stupid idea, we will call a community action,” Ms Owen said.
“We will block Park Lane and send all the traffic through to the main street so they can see how ludicrous the parking situation is.”
The council is currently surveying residents and businesses on a plan which would see parking restricted to either 15 minutes, one hour or two hours along Ballina Street, the town's main street.
Ms Owen said the council's plan would drive customers away from the town and affect businesses such as cafes and restaurants.
“The real issue here is that there just isn't enough parking in Lennox Head,” Ms Owen said.
“The council needs to take responsibility for this.
“Lennox Head is the jewel in the crown of Ballina Shire, but the money is not spent here on infrastructure.”
Ms Owen has called on the council to proceed with a proposal to increase the number of parking spaces available in Park Lane, behind the main CBD area.
A council spokesperson said the Park Lane nose-in parking plan was included in the shire's Development Control Plan, but that no funding had been allocated for the project.
The timed parking proposal was developed after a number of businesses complained about cars parking all day in Ballina Street, the spokesperson said.
A survey on the parking proposal is available on the council's website: www.ballina.nsw.gov.au
Submissions for the survey close with the council this Friday.
