Cenotaph guard shares his memories from the past

WHEN Goonellabah resident Grant Harding opened up his copy of The Northern Star on Tuesday, he was surprised to see an old photograph of himself at an Anzac Day service in Lismore in 1961.

This week the Star has been running photos of past Anzac Day events, and asking for readers to phone us with more information.

Mr Harding is the man on the right in this image.

"I was a cenotaph guard from 1956 until about 1974," he said.

"The first year I did it, I was only filling in, because they couldn't get a bloke to come up from Evans Head. So I stepped in and did it at the last minute.

"The next year I was invited.

"I said to them, 'what about the bloke from Evans?' But they said he couldn't make it, and so I was a cenotaph guard every year after that.

"I only stopped because I couldn't keep it up anymore."
