Kyogle's celebrity gym opening

SHANNAN Ponton, personal trainer and star of TV series The Biggest Loser, was on hand in Kyogle on Saturday to open the town's new community gym.

But few of the more than 200 people who turned out for the opening were more excited to see Mr Ponton than Rebecca King, 25, of Kyogle.

Ms King said she was a huge fan of Mr Ponton and a regular viewer of The Biggest Loser.

“It's just great to have him here today. I always watch The Biggest Loser,” Ms King said, beaming as she posed for photos with her hero.

Mark Trudinger, chief executive of Kyogle Together, the community organisation which operates the gym, said he was overwhelmed by the response to the gym opening, and explained the decision to fly Mr Ponton in.

“Shannan's a big believer in people helping each other out to improve their health,” he said. “He has really got behind Kyogle's gym, and it's an honour for us to have him travel all the way here for the opening.”

Following the cutting of the ribbon by Mr Ponton, Federal Page MP Janelle Saffin and Bundjalung elder Patsy Nagas, visitors were given a tour of the facility while Mr Ponton and others demonstrated some of the equipment.

Mr Ponton also did his best to motivate the crowd to get in and get more fit. “You've now got a quality gym, you now have to do the hard work and get in there,” he said.

“Take the motivation, take the determination and change your life,” he encouraged. “All you've got to do is just make the first step.”

Ms King was encouraged to do just that, and said she wanted to get fit and would definitely be using the gym and attending some classes.

Ms Saffin said the crowd demonstrated how the community had got behind Kyogle Together and were enthusiastic about getting more fit.

“Sometimes gyms can be a bit intimidating because you feel like you have got to be super-fit to go into one, but the idea here is to make it inclusive and say no, gyms are for everybody,” she said.

“It doesn't matter what level of fitness you are at, and this is what I like about this, it will bring everybody in, it is about inclusion, and it is about access and affordability.”

  • Cross trainers, treadmills, spin and exercise bikes.
