A CCTV camera has caught the moment a car travelling on a bridge slid on ice and  plummeted metres to the ground  in the United States.

As a chilling polar vortex creates havoc across the nation, records are being broken and normally simple tasks are becoming matters of life and death.

Warnings have been issued for people to stay inside and out of the killer cold, along with pleas for people to take in the homeless who are at risk of freezing to death.

Many schools and businesses have closed but some people are still taking to the streets.

The hazards of driving on black ice were made real via the footage of the car plunging from the bridge.

Dozens of cars stream along the road before one unlucky one suddenly slides to the right, crashing through a barrier and over the edge of the bridge.

The footage has been posted on YouTube but there is no indication of the condition of the car's occupants.
