Cavs moving up a gear

MYLES McDowell admits his Casino Cavaliers side can afford no more slip-ups as Far North Coast LJ Hooker League cricket action resumes today.

The Cavaliers face Pottsville needing competition points to reinforce their hopes of a play-off position.

McDowell's side travels to Seabreeze Oval, Pottsville, six points out of the top four and sixth in the standings.

The skipper said his side needed to step up and improve on its inconsistent form - starting today.

"We didn't start off the season as we normally do with a couple of good wins," he said.

"That has made it tougher for us.

"We have to win all our games (now) to make sure we get into the semis.

"If we can win this one it will put us in good stead for the period after Christmas."

The Cavaliers go into the match buoyed by an outright win over struggling Murwill-umbah last time out.

McDowell's bowlers were in form, skittling Murwill-umbah twice.

The skipper said his side needed its bowlers to continue their good form with the ball against the expected stronger opposition today.

"Mitch Holland and Brendan Maguire have gone very well with the ball this season," McDowell said.

"Daniel Moreton has also done well for us batting as an opener.

"It has been a strange season. Either our batsmen have been firing or our bowl-ers - never both at the same time.

"Hopefully we can improve on this."

It is also an important match for Pottsville, which also needs the points to improve its prospects of finals action.

Jamie Bennett's side stands just one place above the Cavaliers on the ladder.

McDowell said there would also be an edge to the action.

"It is a bit of a grudge match," he said.

"They have a couple of our former boys in their side.

"I definitely think we are starting to gel as a team more now (though).

"It will be tough but hopefully we can win."

Leaders Cudgen will be hoping to strengthen their position at the top of the ladder when they clash with Tintenbar-East Ballina at Kingsford Smith Park,Ballina.

In other games:

Alstonville host Ballina Bears at Hill Park Oval, Wollongbar.

Byron Bay travels to Lismore to play Marist Brothers at Oakes Oval.
