Cash lure for NRRRL clubs

THE Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League will unveil a new pre-season competition next week with cash bonuses on offer for successful clubs.

Each club will play one home match and one away match with the top two performers to play off on April 18 for the lion’s share of the cash.

In recent years clubs have organised their own pre-season trials with no specific outcome; the new format is designed to add some incentive to these games.

First grade and Under-18s have been included in the draw, which will be released soon, with all 14 clubs expected to turn out for the tournament over three weekends from March 27.

NRRRL secretary Doug Harrison believes the prizemoney for the new pre-season format will entice clubs to come out of the off-season swinging.

“We have had good support from the clubs, who are all keen to make themselves available for the new pre-season competition,” Harrison said.

“We are expecting the full contingent of top players to turn up.

“It will be interesting to see how they go with a bit of cash on the line.”

The draw will be formulated this weekend, with the first round on March 27-28.

The second round will be on April 10-11 and the finals the following weekend on April 18.

There will also be a play-off for third and fourth, giving two teams another chance to get some miles under the belt before the 2010 NRRRL premiership season kicks off on May 2.
