Cash boost for youngsters
CASINO primary school students Maddison Morrissey, Lillian Toohey, Lachlan Parker and Sam Johnston walked away from school yesterday with $2500 between them.
The St Mary's Primary School students were awarded inaugural sport scholarships with money donated by the Casino RSM Club.
"It was an extremely hard process and any one of our 22 nominees could have won a scholarship," school sports co-ordinator Sam Irvine said.
"The money will help kids with coaching in the sport they perform best at.
"We're lucky because I don't know how many other schools in the area would offer kids something like this."
Lachlan and Sam play rugby league and have won consecutive grand finals with their Casino Cougars Under-12 team.
Sam has also made Polding teams and both boys were part of the St Mary's line-up that won consecutive Matty King Shields, a competition for local primary school teams.
Maddison Morrissey is a tennis player and plans to use the money to help with coaching and the cost of travel.
Lillian Toohey is in Year 6 and has represented the Lismore Diocesan team in netball.
She will take part in further trials at Bathurst and will represent Casino at the State age championships.
