CARRIE Fisher's mother, Debbie Reynolds, has died after being rushed to hospital earlier today as a result of a possible stroke.

TMZ is reporting that the medical emergency took place as the 84-year-old was at her son Todd's home in Beverly Hills where they were planning Carrie Fisher's funeral.

Follwowing the death, Reynolds paid tribute to her daughter on Facebook, writing: "Thank you to everyone who has embraced the gifts and talents of my beloved and amazing daughter. I am grateful for your thoughts and prayers that are now guiding her to her next stop. Love Carrie's Mother."

Reynolds and Fisher were close over the past few years but in a 2011 joint interview with Oprah, Fisher revealed, "We had a fairly volatile relationship earlier on in my 20s."

"I didn't want to be around her," she said, "I did not want to be Debbie Reynolds' daughter."

Reynolds responded by saying: "It's very hard when your child doesn't want to talk to you and you want to talk to them, and you want to touch them, you want to hold them.

"It was a total estrangement. She didn't talk to me for probably 10 years. So that was the most difficult time of all. Very painful, very heartbreaking."

TMZ's cameras were there as an ambulance rushed Reynolds to a nearby hospital:
