Carp were fish of Casino's day

CARPE DIEM: Seize the day, or the fish.

That's what Mark Leeson, of Casino, did when he won the senior division of the inaugural Casino RSM Social Fishing Club Carp Muster 2009 with a whopping 2.9kg fish plucked from the Richmond River at the weekend.

“I speared it,” Mr Leeson said.

The competition was held as an attempt to reduce carp numbers in the river which have been building up over the past five years.

Carp ate fish eggs which had led to dwind- ling numbers of native fish in the river, event organiser Rex Clarke, of Casino, said.

At the weekend, 27 fish were caught by 54 fishers who registered for the competition.

Mr Clarke was disappointed with the small number of contestants.

Josh Benn, of Casino, won the junior section with a 2.1kg catch.
