Carnival time as beef meets reef

A CARNIVAL atmosphere will take over Oak St on Sunday, May 20 as beef again meets the reef at Evans Head.

For the second year, Evans Head will host Beef Meets the Reef as part of Casino Beef Week celebrations after a highly successful inaugural event last year.

Oak St will become a centre of fun, with jumping castles, a merry-go-round, Old McDonald's Farm, music, plus cattle exhibits and much more.

The organisers are also hoping to run a Mermaid and Merman competition to complement Beef Week's Queen and Mr Beef.

And there will be a parade through Oak St, showcasing the town, plus a tug-o-war competition pitting business owners against the Evans Head Casino Surf Life Saving Club and local football teams.

"We will create a carnival day for Evans Head in Oak St that reflects some of the activity of Casino Beef Week," Beef Meets the Reef organising committee chairman Shane Todd, of Spar Evans Head, said.

"There will be sample bags, clowns, people singing along the street and people doing circus acts; there will be all these activities which will culminate in a parade and a marching band down the street."

Casino Beef Week president Stuart George said Beef Meets the Reef was a great success in 2011 and he welcomed its return to this year's program. "It is wonderful to get Evans Head involved with Beef Week and this year it is great to see the business people of Evans Head have really gotten behind it," he said.
