5000 jobs on horizon as Adani plans construction for 2017

ADANI hopes to begin the construction of its Carmichael coal mine next year.

State Premier Annastascia Palaszczuk was at Komatsu in Paget today with Adani chief executive officer Jeyakumar Janakaraj to announce final Government approval of three individual mining leases for the proposed mine, about 160km northwest of Clermont.

"My government is 100% committed to creating jobs across Queensland and jobs in regional Queensland," Ms Palaszczuk said.

The benefits of the mine would far outweigh the challenges Minister for State Development and Natural Resources and Mines Anthony Lynham said.

Dr Lynham said "many voices have been heard and a lot of evidence considered" including an environmental statement of more than 32,000 pages with nearly 200 strict conditions.

Ms Palaszczuk said the Carmichael project would inject more jobs into the struggling mining industry.

"Here, for local industries, like this one we're at here today in Mackay, it means jobs for local people as well," she said.

Adani estimates construction of the mine, rail line to Abbot Point and the port expansion project will generate more than 5000 jobs at the peak of construction and more than 4500 jobs during the peak of operations.

Whitsunday, Mackay and Isaac regional council mayors Andrew Willcox, Greg Williamson and Anne Baker were there for the long-awaited announcement.

It's a "dream come from true" for Cr Willcox.

Cr Baker said "this is exactly what we've been waiting for".

Cr Williamson said he could not wait to get things under way.

"Let's make it happen," he said.

Mr Janakaraj said he hoped construction of the mine would start by next year.
