Carl Barron a hit in Lismore with 6th show now on sale
COMEDIAN Carl Barron has sold out a record five shows at Lismore City Hall in July and August, and the sixth and final Lismore show went on sale yesterday.
With a capacity of just over 500 people, Lismore City Hall has already booked seats for more than 2500 people to see the Queensland comedian in Lismore.
The pressure for tickets was so high that promoter Artie Laing decided to offer a gig in Grafton, too.
Barron, 51, sold out two 900-seat shows in Grafton in 90 minutes each, with tickets for a final third gig also going out for sale in Grafton yesterday.
Barron is currently enjoying a holiday in Asia.
He will be back to Australia next week to promote his latest movie, Manny Lewis, being released on DVD.
Promoter Artie Laing said he was not completely sure the reason for such demand for tickets on the Northern Rivers.
"He tours each show for a couple of years, and then he takes a year to write the next one, so maybe people only get to see him live only every four years," he said.
"The last time Carl performed in Lismore was in December 2010 and then he did four shows.
"People love his style.
"He is the highest selling DVD comedian in the stand-up comedy genre in Australia."
Barron's style of comedy is based on observational humour, and he follows the trend of not having a particular theme to his shows.
He mixes personal experiences and current affairs in a show that features quick punch lines and improvised interaction with the audience.
The son of a sheep shearer, he was born in Longreach, Queensland, and formerly worked as an apprentice roof tiler.
Since winning Comic of the Year and Best Up and Coming Talent in 1993, Barron has established himself as one of the most accomplished comedy performers in Australia and around the world.
His first DVD release, Carl Barron Live, won Best Menu Design at the Australian DVD Awards and is the country's highest selling stand-up comedy DVD in Australian retail history.
His second show, Whatever Comes Next, won Best International Show at the New Zealand Comedy Festival, which was then released on DVD, entering the charts at number one.
