Car thief in Santa hat

POLICE are appealing to the public for information after a man wearing a Santa hat tried to steal a car at Alstonville this morning.

Ballina police were called to Alstonville in the early hours of this morning in response to a car alarm sounding on Cooke Ave.

Police said a witness who called 000 saw three juvenile men running from the alarm and reported one of the men was wearing a Santa hat.

When police arrived at Cooke Ave about 1.40am they found a silver Ford station wagon in the table drain on the nature strip.

Police said one of the offenders was inside the vehicle and fled when he was spotted by officers.

A chase ensued police saw the other two men near Ballina Road.

Following the attempted theft police are warning people to keep their vehicles locked at all times and to keep their keys in a safe place.
