Car stolen in night home invasion

AN ELDERLY Byron Bay couple were awakened from their sleep to find an intruder lurking in their bedroom.

The man was assaulted by the intruder in a scuffle and the couple’s blue Ford Laser was stolen.

Graham Hole, 41, told police when arrested he had been travelling through the Northern Rivers on his way to Darwin when he ran out of money.

He appeared in Lismore Local Court charged with aggravated break and enter (he knew people were inside), stealing a motor vehicle, and assault at a Byron Street home at 5am on August 30 last year.

Hole, of Victoria, told police that while passing though Byron Bay he fell short of funds and was having trouble surviving, getting food and some-where to stay, so had been camping in the bush and beach.

Police documents state Hole has an extensive criminal record in Victoria and South Australia and caused ‘serious fears’ for the elderly Byroncouple when he was found in their bedroom.

The car was stolen after a scuffle with the elderly maleoccupant. With Hole remaining in custody the matter wasadjourned to March 2.
