CAPSIZED: Three men thrown into water as boat sinks

THREE boaties are lucky to be alive after their tinny capsized on the Brunswick River during a late night voyage.

Tweed/Byron police said a large wave hit and overturned the men's tinny-style vessel as it was traversing the Brunswick Heads bar.

Emergency services, including ambulance, Marine Rescue and surf lifesavers, rushed to the scene at 10.30pm.

The Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter was en route but was turned around after the three men, all aged in their 30s, swam 250m to the shore from their sinking tinny.

All three were wearing lifejackets.
