Campaign targets car dealerships after employees' complaints

CAR DEALERS across regional Queensland and New South Wales have been put on notice, with the Fair Work Ombudsman to investigate staff entitlements as part of an industry compliance campaign.

The FWO announced the campaign on Wednesday, which will target motor vehicle dealerships in 40 regional cities and towns as well as Brisbane, Sydney and Canberra.

Audits will be conducted on about 460 businesses selling cars, motorcycles, caravans and other vehicles across Queensland, NSW and the Australian Capital Territory.

Fair Work Ombudsman Nicholas Wilson said the car sales industry was selected as a campaign target as it was a persistent source of complaints from employees.

"If audits reveal contraventions, fair work inspectors will help employers voluntarily rectify errors and put processes in place to prevent mistakes in the future," he said.

But before the audits start, employers in car retail sales will be contacted by the ombudsman's office with information to help them comply with workplace regulations.

"This campaign is an ideal opportunity for employers in the motor vehicle retailing industry to ensure they understand their obligations under workplace laws and check that their systems and processes are rigorous," Mr Wilson said.

The campaign will target numerous regional cities including the Sunshine Coast, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Bundaberg, Lismore, Coffs Harbour and Grafton, among others.

Fair work inspectors will randomly select employers for audits to check they were paying workers in line with minimum wage, penalty and overtime rates and are complying with record-keeping and pay slip obligations.

Inspectors will also check that written agreements outlining employee entitlements are in place for any salespeople on commission-based pay arrangements.

For more information, workers and employers can call the Fair Work Infoline on 13 13 94.
