Campaign for cheaper health insurance gaining momentum

A CAMPAIGN designed to help people get cheaper health insurance premiums has already attracted more than 30,000.

The Big Health Insurance Switch, launched on Sunday, set out with the goal of signing up 25,000 people between now and March 22.

Almost 9000 people had signed up early on Monday, but by the afternoon that number had ballooned to almost 31,000.

One Big Switch will use what is calls "people power" in an attempt to negotiate a discount on a range of health insurance policies from a provider.

The campaign is modelled on the One Big Switch campaign, which last year helped more than 60,000 people get a better deal on their power bills.

In effect, One Big Switch is a brokerage firm - it obtains a fee from the businesses that gain customers through the campaigns.

One Big Switch admits the health insurance campaign is an "experiment" and there is "no guarantee it will succeed".

It also concedes the negotiated policies may not be the cheapest on the market.

"But if other health insurance providers are forced to compete with any Big Health Insurance Switch offers, that's great, it means consumers win," the website reads.

"The Big Health Insurance Switch is about driving competition across the whole market, and getting people interested in the health insurance policy, not necessarily creating the cheapest product on the market."

Christopher Zinn, One Big Switch's director of campaigns, said the early response to the initiative was encouraging.

"When it comes to health insurance, if you're paying full price, you could be paying too much, because there are discounts out there. We're determined to open them up to anybody who joins," Mr Zinn said.

The campaign closes at midnight on March 22.
