Camp Out a safe space for gay teens

A CAMP for gay and lesbian teens will be held at Smiths Lake on the NSW Central Coast next month.

Media liaison officer Anika Vinson said that Camp Out offered the chance for sex and gender diverse 13- to 17-year-olds to attend a five-night away-from-home camp with similar people, offering a safe place to express themselves.

“This is a place where the kids can ‘hang out' and not be judged for who they are and who they like,” Ms Vinson said.

“There is a need for all gender diverse teens to have access toresources and networks so that they don't feel isolated.

“So we're reaching out to rural kids to the regional kids who don't always have access to resources that others may take for granted.

“Now, I understand that not everyone can afford the $175 for acc-ommodation and food at the camp, but there is a sliding scale. No teen who needs to be here will be turned away.”

ACON Northern Rivers has more information and can be reached on 6622 1555.

Registrations for the camp close September 17.
