Calm after ocean swim storm

WHILE it was all quiet on Byron's main beach yesterday, debate continued to rage about the late cancellation of the Winter Whales Ocean Swim Classic on Sunday.

Some swimmers defied organisers by entering the water and later had to be rescued.

But there wasn't much sympathy for them in comments left on The Northern Star's website.

One writer said those rescued had "water logged" brains and should be billed for their rescue.

Another said many were strong swimmers, had travelled a long way, and paid to compete so "may as well do it".

After the recent tragedy at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships a third writer said even "strong swimmers drown".
