Call to divert bypass funding
LISMORE Councillor Graham Meineke wants the $55 million the RTA was to spend on the now abandoned Bangalow bypass to be diverted to upgrading the Bangalow to Lismore Road.
He says in a motion to be put to Tuesday’s council meeting that the RTA had previously asked council if they wanted the money spent on the bypass or an upgrade of Bangalow Road.
“Now we have been advised of the abandonment of the (bypass) we should hold the RTA to its utterances and ask for a commitment to the Bangalow Road upgrading,” Cr Meineke says in his motion.
The controversial Bangalow bypass was canned in March following research that showed it would not be economically viable and would result in only minor improvements to the region’s road network.
Council staff support Cr Meineke’s motion and recommend that councillors also seek assurances from the RTA that they maintain the road as a State highway, and that curves with high accident rates on the road be straightened and more overtaking lanes added.
Staff also want the RTA to commit to mitigation measures should traffic deviate from Bangalow Road and cause traffic problems on the Bruxner Highway, which they say should be the ‘priority route’ over Bangalow Road.
