Byron toy business goes global

A TOY making business born in a Byron Bay lounge room four years ago has gone global with their toys and gifts now on sale in 12 countries world-wide.

When friends Kate Nicolson and Leesa Hallahan launched O.B. Designs in 2008 they never dreamed they would be in negotiations with retail giant David Jones to sell their wares.

But last month they signed on the dotted line on a contract that could secure their immediate future.

"It was always our intention to make a living out of our toys but we didn't know how it was going to go," she said.

"It felt friggen awesome to meet the buyers at the flagship David Jones store in Sydney when we signed the contract."

Mrs Nicolson who is responsible for sales and marketing said the business had gone from strength to strength since designer Leesa made their first toy 'Emma Owl' while sitting on the lounge at home in Byron Bay.

She said their products were now sold in 150 stores across Australia and in 12 countries around the world.

"We created a business where we could let loose our off beat side, make and stock items that we would happily buy ourselves and show the world it can be fun to be a bit different," she said.

Mrs Nicolson said O.B. Designs is an environmentally and socially conscious business that uses recyclable materials where ever possible, the very minimum in the way of plastic for packaging and takes great consideration when choosing where we source our production.

She said two-and-a-half years into their business they could not keep up with demand so they researched and visited a manufacturer in Indonesia.
