Byron lifesavers rescue woman from yacht

Surf Life Savers from Byron Bay have assisted in the successful emergency evacuation of a woman from a yacht on Sunday morning.

Emergency services were advised late on Saturday evening that a 65-year-old woman had fallen in the cabin of her boat and had suffered back injuries, and was having difficultly breathing. The injury occurred after the boat she was traveling in encountered heavy seas on the way to Ballina.

The skipper of the sailing vessel advised that conditions were deteriorating and opted to anchor the vessel off Byron Bay after consulting with Marine Rescue who was also involved in the rescue.

Lifesavers were informed of the incident just after 7am on Sunday morning. An Inflatable Rescue Boat went out to assist the woman after consulting with the boat's skipper and ambulance workers.

The woman was administered pain relief and transported to shore before being taken to Byron Bay hospital.
