Byron Bay surfer through to next round at Rip Curl Pro

BYRON Bay-based Matt Wilkinson will surf in the fourth round of the Rip Curl Pro when competition resumes at Bells Beach Victoria today.

He has plenty of eyes on him after winning the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast.

Wilkinson came out firing with two solid 7-point rides in the third round before he was beaten by American Kanoa Ingarashi.

"The first wave I finished strong and then every wave after that I started strong and fell off on my last turn," Wilkinson said.

"I obviously can hold back a little on that last turn and make sure I get it done.

"I think my other scores would have been higher if I had settled down and made sure I finished them."

There were plenty of upsets yesterday with former world champions Joel Parkinson and Gabriel Medina eliminated.

Lennox Head surfers Stu Kennedy and Adam Melling have also been knocked out of the competition.

They will next compete at Margaret River in Western Australia.

Meanwhile, former Lennox Head surfer Tyler Wright will surf in the fourth round of the women's competition.

She is looking to win back-to-back events for the first time after taking out the Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast.
