Byron Bay wins again

BYRON BAY continues to make the NSW Country Surf Life Saving Championships their own by winning the carnival for the second consecutive year at South West Rocks yesterday.

They finished on 774 points, well ahead of second-placed Warilla-Barrack Point (626) with Coffs Harbour third (536.5).

"Everyone contributed and we're pretty strong in most events," Byron Bay club president Neil Cameron said.

"We try to make the carnival our own and we've won it more than any other club.

"We take it seriously and always have a strong representation in the masters all the way down to nippers."

Josh Brown was a standout for Byron Bay in the Under-15s, taking out the board, swim and ironman events.

"I got the trifecta last year at the Country Champs, so it's a real confidence-booster to do it again this year," Josh said.

Cudgen finished in fourth position on 531 points with recruit Ellie Leaver winning the Under-19 surf race, beach sprint and coming second in the Under-19 ironwoman.

Lennox Head finished fifth on 360 points and were well served by Brad Hunt who took out the Under-11 beach sprint and flag events.

The three-day carnival was one of the final hit-outs before the NSW Championships at Kingscliff in March.
