Byron Bay bashing man in coma

GOOD Samaritans helped a 30-year-old Irishman get to hospital after he was left lying on the road with serious head injuries in Byron Bay on Sunday morning.

The man was found about 3am near the roundabout at the corner of Jonson and Lawson streets.

Police said several people came to the injured man's aid before a concerned passerby took him to Byron Bay Hospital.

The man, believed to have been travelling in Australia since November, was then taken by ambulance to a Brisbane hospital in a critical condition. Yesterday he remained in a coma.

Police have been told several men were involved in a physical altercation with the victim.

A number of people are believed to have witnessed the incident, but have yet to speak to police.

Local publicans were wondering what sparked the incident.

"It was just a normal night last night," one publican said.

"I didn't hear anything from the other hotels, which is unusual, and I drove home down Jonson Street and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.

"We had a local band playing last night and everyone seemed to be behaving themselves."

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Byron Bay detectives or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
