THE Byron Bay Australia Day Paddle for 2016 has been cancelled, organisers of the event have announced.

The organisers said spiralling costs including insurances and administrative obstacles had resulted in the decision to cancel the popular, community-fundraising event.

The Australia Day BBQ organised by the Byron Bay Rotary Club will still go ahead at the Byron Bay Surf Club.

The organisers of the Paddle thanked the long term supporters, volunteers, and participants of the event, including the event's generous sponsors.

The organisers still held out hope that the spirit of the event would continue and that the paddle would make a reappearence in 2017.
