Bust the boredom with fun holiday ideas

Inexpensive activities

PACK a picnic lunch, throw a rug in the car and take the kids for a picnic.

Enjoy a riverside picnic along the Wilsons or Richmond rivers or an escape to the hinterland with the family.

There are picnic areas and facilities from the coast to the mountains.


EXPLORE the natural beauty of the Northern Rivers by visiting Bundjalung, Nightcap and Border Ranges national parks or the Whian Whian Conservation Area.

National parks across the Northern Rivers feature many spectacular bushwalks, waterfalls and picnic locations.

Camping is available at the Black Rocks camping area in Bundjalung National Park, Rummery Park camping area in Nightcap National Park, Forest Tops campground and Sheepstation Creek campground in the Border Ranges National Park.


GRAB your fishing rods, some bait and take the kids fishing.

Whether you wet a line in either the Richmond or Wilsons rivers or off the beach, fishing is fun for the kids and a relaxing way to enjoy the outdoors.


PUT the kids' bikes, skateboards or scooters in the car and head to one of the skate parks in the area.

Skateboarders, bike riders and scooter enthusiasts are spoiled for choice, with skate parks across the Northern Rivers at Lismore, Ballina, Casino, Evans Head, Kyogle, Nimbin, Byron Bay, Brunswick Heads, Suffolk Park and Lennox Head.


THE Chill Cafe Youth Service is offering plenty to do for kids from Evans Head, Woodburn, Coraki and Broadwater.

Activities include free surfing lessons or canoeing on Wednesday, April 17, and Monday, April 22.

On Friday, April 19, at Evans Head Skate Park there will be a Zorb ball and barbecue from 11am-3pm followed by a 5pm pool competition.

A free laser skirmish will be held from noon on Wednesday, April 24, at the Evans Head Catholic Church grounds.


Wet weather activities

GO to the movies to catch the latest children's film.

Movies coming out for kids these holidays include The Croods and Zambezia.


TAKE the kids to the local library and let them choose a book to borrow.

Council libraries across the Northern Rivers have more than just books, with internet access, holiday workshops, audio books and more.


GET creative and have some fun with the kids.

A treasure box making workshop will be held on Monday, April 15, from 2-3.30pm at Ballina library. Call 6686 2831 to book.

Create colourful designs and artworks with sand during the second week of the holidays, except Anzac Day, at Lismore Shopping Square.

The Kidz Klub at the Lennox Head Cultural and Community Centre will give children the opportunity to get creative for a full or half day. The Kidz Klub will be held from Monday to Friday across the school holidays, except Anzac Day. Bookings are essential, phone 6686 6291.


AN interactive animal show presented by keepers from the Macadamia Castle is on during the first week of the holidays at Lismore Shopping Square.


SPEND some time in the kitchen with your kids teaching them how to cook their favourite meal.

Since the explosion of cooking shows on TV, most children enjoy getting creative in the kitchen and eating the finished product.
