NEW SLIDE: Woodburn pool has a new slide attraction for the summer holidays.

SUMMER is the season for swimming and Lower and Mid Richmond area residents have some great choices for the water babies.

Following its opening in August 2010, the Evans Head Aquatic Centre has been recognised by the Master Builder's Association. An award was provided to Glenzeil, builders of the centre, for the Best Sporting Complex more than $5 million in the Regional Building Awards (2011).

Richmond Valley Council's director of works, Gary Murphy, said this had brought the standard of aquatic facilities available to the lower river community up to that which would normally be enjoyed by larger towns.

"The centre, which incorporates a 25m pool, gymnasium, and leisure pool, received in excess of 36,000 patrons through the gates last season," he said.

"The addition of an inflatable obstacle course over weekends and school holidays has added to the attractiveness of the venue for patrons. The Woodburn Pool has also been popular with patrons, and the new water slide commissioned over Christmas. This complex had welcomed in excess of 3800 patrons last season."

Mr Murphy said Coraki Pool would soon be upgraded, with plans for a waterslide for this facility in 2012.

"This complex had welcomed in excess of 2000 patrons last season," he said.

All Richmond Valley Council-owned pools are run by Freney Aquatic Enterprises Pty Ltd. Operations and administration managers, Michael and Joanne Freney, as well as staff members, have been pleased with the community support they and the pool programs have received.

"The new inflatable obstacle course at the Evans Head Aquatic Centre has been a real hit with kids and teens," Ms Freney said.

"And the younger patrons at the Woodburn pool are excited about the new waterslide".

Swim and Survive lessons will be operating from all Richmond Valley pools during the holidays. Bookings are essential at your nearest pool.
