Budding firies graduate

"COOL" and fighting bushfires are not concepts that go together.

However, Clarence Valley Anglican School Year 9 student Taylah Mayberry was one of 35 students who gradu- ated from the RFS Cadet Program this week and described messing about with water, high-pressure hoses and tankers as "cool".

But also "cool" to the teen was the experience of doing something that could help someone out.

"When we first saw the videos of what they were doing I really wanted to do the course," Taylah said.

The knowledge she and her school mates gained over the year is also going to help in the future.

"It's going to be cool to be able to help out," she said.

On Thursday the RFS North membership services officer Superintendent Lance Rainey presented certificates and caps to the students at the school assembly.

He said it was too early to tell if there was a significant conversion rate from the cadet programs to the senior RFS, saying the process was more like training young athletes.

"At that age you don't know what you're going to get, but you know you're going to end up with a few good ones," Supt Rainey said.

"We sow the seeds in these programs and hope some will germinate."

School principal Tim Grosser said the program would continue at the school for Year 9 students.
